Amenuensis Monday - Christopher Shuford Humphries and Louise Anna Ruppe

Amenuensis Monday is a daily blogging prompt used by Geneabloggers.com to help them post content on their sites. An Amanuensis is a person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another. Amanuensis Monday is a daily blogging theme which encourages the family historian to transcribe family letters, journals, audiotapes, and other historical artifacts. Not only do the documents contain genealogical information, the words breathe life into kin. Here is my contribution today:

Cause of death: Uremia due to chronic nephritis (duration 4 wks) due to cardio-renal*
Burial: 11/28/1954 in Smith's Grove, Forest City, NC
* Uremia is a term used to loosely describe the illness accompanying kidney failure (also called renal failure), in particular the nitrogenous waste products associated with the failure of this organ. Early symptoms include anorexia and lethargy, and late symptoms can include decreased mental acuity and coma. Other symptoms include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, cold, bone pain, itch, shortness of breath, and seizures.

* Chronic nephritis (chronic meaning ongoing) is a chronic inflammation of the tissues of the kidney. It is caused by a wide variety of etiological factors. The disease is frequently associated with a slow, progressive loss of kidney function. It is usually discovered accidentally, either by routine urinalysis (tests done to check kidney function) or during a routine physical checkup when anemia, hypertension, or laboratory findings (elevated serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen) are discovered. Its course is long and the prognosis (expectancy of cure) is poor. Protein and blood in urine, high blood pressure, gradual kidney failure, urea retention. Common causes include infection, or reaction to medication. Both acute and chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis can be caused by a bacterial infection in the kidneys, known as pyelonephritis. The most common cause is by an allergic reaction to a drug. The drugs that are known to cause this sort of reaction are antibiotics such as penicillin and cephalexin, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin. The time between exposure to the drug and the development of acute tubulointerstitial nephritis can be anywhere from 5 days to 5 months (fenoprofen induced).

* The cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) is a condition characterized by kidney failure and heart failure. The primarily failing organ may be either the heart or the kidney, and it is often this failing organ that precipitates failure of the other.
